She was a performer, designer and a music pioneer. She was at once contemporary and traditional a Mexican-American performer who merged both genres with a unique approach. She also delivered amazing Tejano music to a mass crowd. The same way many people mourn a star who died too young, her death was untimely and shattered a growing career. To stop her successes from going unnoticed her many admirers over these past few years have been motivated to achieve more. The tragic shooting death of Selena caused a reaction in the Latino community that was similar to reactions following the deaths of Elvis Presley or John Lennon. A hugely popular performer within Latino communities across North America her music crossed lines of cultural difference to affect the lives of young as well as old. Selena was a sexy, flamboyant performer on stage and was often known as the Latina Madonna. In her off-stage life, Selena was also an outstanding role model, as she was active in anti-drug and AIDS campaigning.
